6 Unique cafes in Tokyo

I feel like websites always post the same cafes over and over again, like robot cafes, maid cafes, so I want to show you other unique cafes in Tokyo to go to! Most of these places I have been too and really enjoyed, and some I haven’t been to but heard great reviews so I decided to put them in this list too. Hopefully, there’s something on this list that peaks your interest, and makes your trip to Japan even better! Enjoy all these wonderful, fun and unique cafes in Tokyo!

Moomin cafe

There are many themed cafes in Tokyo, but this cafe makes sure that you aren’t lonely and gives its customers the opportunity to have lunch with the characters of the Moomin franchise! Don’t worry if you go alone, you will always have company. Whether you come alone or with friends, the cafe staff will always introduce you to one of the giant Moomin soft toys at the establishment!

Hello from the gang

Even though it’s a cafe, they also have a bakery where you can go in and buy bread. This option is much cheaper than sitting in and dining. That’s what I personally did and I got this cute bread that was in the shape of the Moomins! Too cute! My friends said that they dined in and the food was great but quite expensive. But they did say that it is a definite must-go at least once while you’re in Tokyo to experince Unique cafes in Tokyo.

If it’s too expensive or you don’t have time to sit down and dine, they also have a take out menu aside from the bakery so you can eat outside the cafe or at home. This cafe is inside Tokyo Dome, which is free to enter amusement park in the middle of Tokyo, and I loved to just stroll around the park because it is so lively. It’s not as great as being able to sit in and dine, but you can just sit and munch on bread in the area. I always loved hearing the people scream on the rollercoasters and they ride across the area.

There is no need to make reservations, and the restaurant usually isnt full, so there should always be seats. Just walk in.

mipig café: Cutest Unique cafes in Tokyo

You probably heard of cafes in Tokyo with cats, but did you know that there are even more unique cafes in Tokyo? At micro pig cafe, they have tiny pigs running around the cafe, and it’s the cutest concept ever! These little piggies love to snuggle and run to your arms the moment you sit down. I have also written a blog post on my experience.

Being with these pigs made my heart so warm and they are such lovable animals. I have been to cat cafes, and oftentimes, the cats are tired of being with people, but the pigs seemed to never be tired and constantly wanted to be around people and climb up onto people’s arms. I recommend buying pig’s treats from the menu. It is a few hundred yen and you get a whole bowl of the pigs’ favorite food and all the pigs in your area will flock to you as they want to be fed. It’s honestly so cute and hearing them oink is really adorable!

You can book to go to mipig easily, through klook’s Micro Pig Cafe Experience in Harajuku. The package includes a 1-Hour with Micro Pig Experience with Refreshments and a cute mipig donut.

There are two locations, and the Harajuku branch which is brand new, so I don’t really have any information on it. Even though this is quite expensive, this is one of my memories that I loved the most while I was in Japan and I love telling people that I been to a micro pig cafe.

Cafe ASAN

This cozy cafe lets you relax on a hammock while relaxing, studying, or doing work. This is one of the most unique cafes in Tokyo that will make you feel at home and in ease. The vibe is so nice and the hammocks are surprisingly really comfortable to sit in and if you get sick of sitting in it, you can switch over to a proper seat that is also given to you. There are outlets all over the cafe so you can easily charge all your devices.

When I went there, I had the pancake souffle which was about 1100 yen but HUGE! They also have regular food menus like pasta, rice, and curry for around 700 yen. The pancake was really good but it had too much whipped cream and I was not able to finish it on my own.

Personally I liked this cafe because it was suited for people going alone since the hammocks are only for one person and it was such a great way to relax and have a little alone time. The pancakes took a long time to come out, but I’m not sure if that’s always the case, or if it was just for me. I waited for about 30 minutes for it, but I didn’t mind because I went there to do work and relax, so the longer it took, the better it was for me so I did not feel pressured to leave. So, don’t go here if you are really starving. There were also many people doing work here so don’t feel too pressured if you feel like you been there for a long time.

Ueno isn’t too much of a tourist spot, so this cafe isn’t usually full. When I went there, there were hammocks open but during weekends or holidays, it may be busy and the hammocks may be occupied. This cafe is also right next to Akihabara, so if you plan to go there, this place might be good to go to relax after.

Starbucks (Omotesando) – Unique cafes in Tokyo

Starbucks Omotesando is a unique Starbucks outlet in Tokyo located on the 6th floor of Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku. It is open from 7am, and to enter you have to use the elevators on the left side of Tokyu Plaza.

The views from either inside the store and at the terrace is incredible. You can see all the way down Omotesando through a high view and take pretty photos. Not to mention, the terrace its self is so nice and peaceful with many plants around. They play music throughout the place and it feels so nice to soak in the sun while drinking your tea. The balcony its self is also so big for you to explore and walk around and even finding little secluded areas if you don’t want people near you.

A bonus tip is that you don’t even need to buy a drink to enter the terrace so you can quickly look around and snap pictures for free. But if you plan on sitting down and spending a lot of time there, please be sure to buy something. Do not be rude.

Because this is in a very touristy spot, it does get crowed pretty fast. I once went right at opening at 7am and it was so peaceful but by noon, it was pretty crowded with people taking photos.

Dandelion Chocolate, Factory & Cafe Kuramae

The moment you walk into this cafe, the smell of chocolate is noticeably very strong. This cafe combines a cafe and factory in one. The second floor is a cafe with seats, and the first floor is a mini factory making chocolate on the spot. Everything that they sell in the store is made directly handmade from the factory on the first floor. There aren’t many cafes in Tokyo like this one!

The seating area was very spacious and is such an amazing atmosphere to spend time with friends or to do homework. The high ceiling and the plants definitely made the atmosphere very welcoming. This is definitely the most aesthetically pleasing cafe within all the unique Cafes in Tokyo. Unfortunately, there is a lack of power outlets, so before you sit down, make sure you are seating near an outlet. Overall, the place was homey and cozy. My friend and I were able to spend hours doing our work here, and the cafe didn’t get quite crowded. There is also free water if you want to save your money on drinks and if you get yourself a cookie or a muffin.

We bought a cocoa drink and it was so rich and delicious! The cup is quite small for the price but you can tell the drink was made from high-quality chocolate! They also gave us thin mini cookies to go along with the cocoa.

Many people were also here doing work, but some were just here to hang out, so sometimes it did get a little loud, but it wasn’t too disturbing. We went towards the morning and as it passed noon and to the afternoon, it was noticeably a bit little louder, so go in the morning for the best time for quiet.

Mame-Shiba cafe

You already know that there are many animal and unique cafes in Tokyo, but did you know that there is a Shiba Cafe right in Harajuku? It’s a Mame-Shiba cafe with homey vibes. The entry fee (¥880) covers entrance, a drink, and a time slot of 30 minutes. You have to get there early to avoid long queues, or you will have to first go in once, purchase your tickets, and get a time slot to come back. Wait time could be two hours depending on your time of arrival. When I went around noon, they told me to come back in an hour.

Thankfully, once you’ve purchased your tickets and have been informed of your time slot, you’re free to walk around Takeshita-dori instead of spending all that time in the line. So don’t stress too much even if your wait time is long. Takeshita-dori has many shops to go in and look around. Just remember to return to counter for the cafe around fifteen minutes before your allocated timeslot.

There are no shoes allowed, and when entering you enter with a group of 4-5 people and then prompted to get a drink from the vending machines. There isn’t any seating, and most cases, you will end up walking around petting the dogs, so put the cup somewhere where you remember. You just have to sit on the floor to pet the dogs.

The dogs at mame Shiba Cafe

Although it was very cute, the dogs seemed tired and didn’t play that much, and rather was fighting with each other a little bit. So don’t expect to be showered with love from the dogs. The dogs are still extremely cute though! The best way that I found was sitting next to a dog that is laying down and chilling with them next to them, so do not force yourself onto them.

There are a lot of foreigners that go here, so you don’t need to know Japanese. The staff workers will speak to you in English about the rules of the cafe when entering. Remember that even though its a cafe, they only give one small cup, and the dogs are the main part of the cafe.
