Japan is known to be the home of Ramen with ramen shops at every corner, but one restaurant wanted to stand among the thousands of ramen shops around Japan. A small ramen shop in Osaka called Furanken served the unlikely combination of ramen with chocolate-vanilla soft serve ice cream on top of spicy miso ramen for 850 yen ($6.15 as of July 2022), and it was a great success! Would you try this ramen with soft serve ice cream?
The Amakara Miso Ramen which directly translates to sweet and spicy Miso Ramen sprinkles aonori on the vanilla and chocolate swirl to give a bit of savory topping. They also cut the ice cream in half so it’s really not as much ice cream as we assume, but since technically it’s a dessert and a meal at once, it removes the need to get dessert after a meal right?
Most people were commenting on how unimaginable and awful this must be, but all the people who have actually tasted it stated that it was surprisingly very good. Eaters state that they can’t really taste anything weird about it and that it tastes like regular delicious ramen, but much creamier. It is apparently the perfect blend of sweet and spicy.
Spicy miso ramen is usually spicy, as the name implies, but since the ice cream melts right into the soup, it tones down the spice. There was a comment online that said they didn’t see a problem with the Ramen with ice cream topping since people put cheese and ramen together to tone down the spiciness of ramen, and they are both essentially doing the same thing. This honestly might be a good option for people with low spice tolerance who needs a dairy to cure their tongue while eating. Is this the next food life hack?
The only problem that I personally have is the cone. I get that the ice cream acts like a cream and melts right into the broth, but I doubt that the cone will melt so will people just eat a ramen-soaked, soggy cone?
Even though it was originally planned to only be a limited-time-only menu from January-March 2022, it seems like they put it back on their menu occasionally to drive more customers since this is their most popular ramen. If I’m in Japan the next time it’s back on the menu, I’m definitely making a stop to Furanken to try ramen with soft serve ice cream, but would you?
