Koenji has slowly become one of my favorite neighborhood to go to. It’s just a short train ride from Shinjuku station which makes it very easy to get to! It has everything that one can ever enjoy like onsen baths, second hand stores, and many cafes and food. There are so many places to eat in Koenji that the possibilities never end.
Places to eat in Koenji
The outside of this café is very unique with colorful colors, and the interior is as impressive as the outside, decorated with wood and cute wall illustrations. The outside looks like something that came out of a fairytale. The food menu includes doria, curry, pizza and taco rice, a popular Okinawan food. They have many different kinds of desserts from cakes, pudding and chocolate. They also have cute latte art and unique drinks like cream soda and caramel milk. The full menu can be seen here.
The store really pushes as a healthy donut shop by using natural ingredients and using soy milk instead of milk in their donuts. They are especially known for decorating their donuts so cute, that it somewhat makes me feel bad every time I eat them. The donuts are slightly crispy outside, and soft and fluffy inside. They have the most variety of donuts in the morning when they first open at 10 am, and start to run out of donuts towards the end of the day, so I recommend going early to make sure you have many choices to pick from. Check out their official website to see updated collaborations. Their menu also has drinks like coffee, tea, and juice. My blog post on Floresta Kōenji
R-za Dokushokan Cafe
This place is a comfy quiet cafe perfect for reading or getting some work done. The aesthetic and the ambience is insanely nice making you feel like you went back in time, with the menu only consisting of drinks. There is also a huge collection of books, with limited an English selection.
Rojo Amigo Kitchen
There are a good amount of TexMex food in Koenji, but Rojo Amigo seems to be one of the best and one of the most authentic and tastiest in town. The store has a great atmosphere and good interior and the staff is kind. You can get anything from Nachos, Quesadilla, shrimp and beef burritos. They also have over 200 hundred tequilas to choose from!
Come here to get one of the best gyoza you have ever tasted in your life with a very friendly owner. The only things on the menu is dumpling and beer. The gyozas are 7 pieces for 250 yen and the taste is apparently exactly the same from the Showa era. There are only 5 seats in the store, and it can be ordered for take out, either home fried gyoza or raw gyoza. The raw dumplings come with instructions on how to cook it. The outside of the fried gyoza is crispy with the inside being chewy.
Tako and Highball
Come to a small cozy restaurant with huge and delicious takoyakis with various seasonings and toppings like fluffy egg, cheese, Scallion and Garlic. The takoyakis are made right in front of you in a nice atmosphere. The staff are all easy to talk to and it seems that most of the people who work here are artists.
Honey Bee Crêpe
Located 5-6 minutes walk from the North exit of Koenji, Honey Bee Crepe has been around for more than 8 years and is getting popular more and more and people line up on the streets on the weekends and holidays. The crepes range from 350 yen, and the crepes are thin, light and crispy with right amount of filling. There are many kinds of crepe flavors that you can choose from, both sweet and savory. Get ice cream, strawberry crepes, cream cheese, bacon, or even salmon. You can customize a crepe to your own liking with additional toppings.
A compact and stylish café located at the end of Azuma-dori shopping street. Get a drink or sweets in this calm café and relax. The menu is has a lot of varieties and is written in both Japanese and English. Their original sweets are all vegan!
