Going to KCON Japan

Going to KCON Japan was such a fun and tiring experience. The year I went to, the event lasted 3 days from May 17th to 19th 2019. The convention and concert was located in Makuhari Messe, which is actually in Chiba Prefecture, not Tokyo, but it is very easy to get to! By train, it is about 30 minutes from Tokyo Station to Kaihin Makuhari Station on the JR Keiyo Line, and from there, it’s about a five-minute walk to Makuhari Messe.

The convention and the concert were two separate events and tickets able to be bought together or separately. Personally, I think the convention was worth it since a lot of the artists who were performing at the concert at night went on the convention stage to talk or perform. The concert was just one floor with no kind of elevation and impossible to see the concert for short people. I doubt the people in the back were able to see anything since the venue was huge. The good part about going to KCON Japan was that all tickets were for seated tickets so there is no need to wait in line, or get squished with other people.

The convention area is huge and when we entered, they gave us a booklet showing where everything was, as well as the different stages, and when the groups were going to be on. There were many pop up stores for make up and k-pop merchandise, as well as a lot of places to take photos in front of. All the way in the back, there was also a food court that sold many kinds of Korean food and tables to sit down at. A lot of these places have free samples for food/products but there are usually long lines for booths like that.

The main convention stage had a bunch of artists and groups come on often at set times and some groups even had performances. Japan is always very strict with cameras during concerts, but they were allowed during the convention.

The rest of the convention was very fun to stroll around and you can never tell when you’ll randomly see a k-pop group since there was so much happening at the same time all around the convention. While strolling around, trying to get free products, I stopped by this booth that said Oneus was stopping by in about 30 minutes so I decide to wait until they came and I ended up being in their Selfie MV.

Towards the end of the day, when it’s almost time for the concert, everything in the convention closes up and loudspeakers tell people to start heading to the concert venue, which is the hall right next to the convention.

Because of my height and not being any elevation at the venue, I was barely able to see anything during the actual concert. The only times I was slightly able to see was when they came up to use the stage up closer to the audience. In the end, there was an encore stage, but there was a light beaming straight to where I was which was blinding me.

Going to KCON Japan was so much fun but by the 3rd day, I was super tired and barely had energy. I tried going all out on all days and tried getting all that kcon had to offer and that definitely wore me out. If you are debating on whether on attending the concert or the convention, I recommend joining the convention only. As someone who attended Kcon NY the past years prior, it was cool to see the difference between the two.
