Hattifnatt Koenji is a cute and cozy restaurant located in Koenji and Kichijoji Tokyo. The outside of this cafe is very unique with colorful colors, and the interior is as impressive as the outside, decorated with wood and cute wall illustrations. The outside looks like something that came out of a fairytale.
I went to the Koenji location and that’s the location I will be writing about. It is often not too crowded and at least a table is usually open. The entrance and the door are so tiny, you have to duck through with the cash register right at the entrance. The steep staircase past the register leads you upstairs, to the seating area. Some of the seating areas are unique and let you sit right at the small attic and a ladder is used to walk up and down. It was really cool to see the servers going up and down this ladder with food and drinks in their hands, but it can be scary for some people.
The seats inside aren’t too comfortable and are made from wood so you can’t really stay for long. The upstairs doesn’t have many servers, so when we wanted to order, we had to pull a string on a pillar that had a bell that would go off downstairs that would alert the servers that we wanted their attention. I never seen any other restaurant that had this kind of system so it was very memorable.
The food was really good and the service was friendly. It’s a great place to eat with a few friends. The menu was really carefully designed and uniquely made with cute illustrations, and it was really fun flipping through the menu. The food menu includes doria, curry, pizza and taco rice, a popular Okinawan food. They have many different kinds of desserts from cakes, pudding and chocolate. They also have cute latte art and unique drinks like cream soda and caramel milk. There also have many different sides, drinks, and alcohol. The full menu can be seen here. The location in Kichijoji seems to have a slightly different menu with gratin on their menu. Their menu can be seen here.
They are most known for their cakes that are made by order so you can enjoy fresh handmade cakes made with fresh cream, custard and sponge, so it might take some time depending on how busy the store it. The most popular cake is their chiffon cake. The cakes cant be order separately and you need to get a drink or food with it.
My Experince at Hattifnatt Koenji
I ordered the Crunchy chiffon banana short with hazelnut and caramel sauce for 630 yen. The short was much more thicker and filling then I thought. The filling and the syrups that it came with made the short so delicious, and I wish there was even more. The taste overall was amazing and I would definitely want to eat it again and try their other cakes.
I also had their Caramel Milk for 650 yen. The caramel milk had ice cream and whipped cream, and it was a little bit too sweet but the taste of caramel was amazing. The caramel they used is homemade caramel sauce
