Planning a trip can be very stressful, and Tokyo is a city that provides so much entertainment and has so many fun places that can overwhelm first-time visitors. So to make your trip stress-free here is are 1 Day Itineraries in Tokyo that you cannot miss when visiting Tokyo curated by me!

Every day will be around an 8 hours schedule, and of course, you can mix and match it to personalize it to yourself however you like. Below are 3 kinds of itineraries for different types of people/vibes.

Classic 1 Day Itineraries in Tokyo

This is for someone who wants to experience classic Tokyo. These are often the first stops where visitors come and see Tokyo. There will also be a choice to either pick routes 1 or 2 from 4:00 pm depending on your preference.

Route One: Shibuya and Shinjuku

10:00 Shibuya Crossing

Start your day off at Shibuya and cross the Shibuya crossing and meet Hachiko. Start your day with some coffee at Starbucks Shibuya Tsutaya while having a great view of the crossing.

10:30 Explore Shibuya

Explore surrounding areas like Village Vanguard, Shibuya 109, Daiso, Tower Records, Mega Donkijote, and Shibuya Parco for the Nintendo store and Pokemon Store.

12:00 Lunch

Have lunch at Uobei Shibuya Dougenzaka to experience conveyor belt sushi, and try new types of sushi!

1:00 Shibuya Sky

Shibuya Sky: Newly built 360° open-air observation deck 229m above Shibuya! Klook has a discount on tickets but admission is only from 10am-2pm. There are many places to relax and even Hammocks!

2:30 Walk around the area

If you have a little extra time, try Nanaya Aoyama for some ice cream. They say they have one of the strongest Matcha in the world! Also, don’t forget to stop by TAITO Station for some arcade games and crane machines!

3:00 Miyashita Park

Go to Miyashita Park, a new rooftop park in Shibuya with a shopping mall. Miyashita park’s rooftop is a very fun place to watch local Japanese people hang out. Get some dessert either from Kith Treats or KitKat Chocolatory. At this Chocolatory, they have their own cafe and an area where you can make your own kit kat!
*Personal kit kat making is 11:30am, 1:30pm, 3:30pm, 17:30pm

Route 1 – For those who are interested in a more trendy and youth day in Harajuku / 1 Day Itineraries in Tokyo

4:00 Harajuku’s Meiji Jingu

Head down to Harajuku and head to Meiji Jingu. Meiji Jingu is one of Tokyo’s most impressive shrines and the most important State Shinto shrine in Japan. It is dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shōken.

5:00 Takeshita Dori

Go to Takeshita Dori, a shopping street lined with fashion boutiques, cafes, thrift stores and restaurants. Shop for young and trendy items at stores like WEGO, Style Nanda, Redeye, and Etude House. Don’t forget to stop by Daiso and Ikea as well!

6:00 Animal cafe

Head to an animal cafe! Relax and snuggle with Micro pigs at mipig cafe, (My blog post on it), play with energetic Shiba inus at Mame Shiba cafe, pet owls at Owl Village Cafe Harajuku, or meet hedgehogs, hamsters, and a meerkat at HARRY Harajuku.

7:00 Dinner

Fill your belly with some street foods like Totti Candy Factory’s huge rainbow cotton Candy, LONG! LONGER!! LONGEST!!!’s Long tornado potato, rainbow sandwich, and ice cream and ZAKUZAKU’s crunchy eclair and ice cream or any Harajuku Crepes!

Route 2 – For those who are interested in a more chill trip in Shinjuku / 1 Day Itineraries in Tokyo

4:00 Shinjuku Gyeon National Park

Head to Shinjuku and visit the Shinjuku gyeon national garden to relax and take a breather. It is Tokyo’s largest and most popular park. It is particularly famous for its seasonal cherry blossoms. Shinjuku Gyoen combines three distinct types of gardens—Japanese traditional, formal, and landscape and creates a perfect place to get some fresh air and rest your feet. Hours change depending on season, so be sure to check out The National Gardens Association to see if you need to push plans a little forward.

5:30 Shopping

Shop at the many malls Shinjuku has to offer like LUMINE EST Shinjuku, Pepe & Brick St LOFT for shops like UNIQLO, LOFT, and ABC Mart. Also take the time to check out Shinjuku station, Tokyo’s biggest and busiest station, with many shops and department stores connected.

6:30 Kabukicho

Stop by Kabukicho to say hi to the 12-meter tall model of Godzilla on top of Hotel Gracery.  Godzilla also lights up and breaths smoke every hour!

This is for those who have a high interest in Japanese anime, games, and idols. These locations are for all the otakus out there! We will be stopping by Akihabara and Sky tree tower!

10:00 Explore the Electric City

Explore the electric city with Arcades and Game Centers at every corner. Visit Animate and Radio Kaikan to stock up on anime-themed merchandise and capsule Machines. Akihabara truly has many stores so it becomes very easy to lose track of time looking through all the different gadgets they have for sale. If you’re looking for anything in particular, you’ll probably be able to find it here!

12:00 Lunch

Get the ultimate Akihabara experience by visiting a maid cafe. I went to Maidreaming and had a very unique and unforgettable experience that can only be experienced in Japan. @Home Cafe Maid Cafe is also another popular maid cafe to visit.

If maid cafe isn’t your thing, visit the Final Fantasy Eorzea Cafe which has Final Fantasy-themed foods and drinks. The decor includes replicas of items from the game, such as weapons and armor. The whole cafe is set to be in the fictional city of Gridania. 

1:00 Kanda Myojin Shrine

Visit Kanda Myojin Shrine to pray for prosperity, good luck and marriage. The shrine’s proximity to Akihabara makes it popular among tech geeks to bless electronic devices.

1:30 Tokyo Skytree Tower

Head to Tokyo Skytree tower, the tallest structure in Japan, at 634 meters (2080 feet) tall. It acts as a broadcasting and observation tower and was built in 2010.

2:00 Solamachi

Go shopping or window shop at Solamachi, a multilevel retail complex with 300+ stores & restaurants located below Tokyo Skytree tower. Visit stores like rilakkuma store, Hello kitty Japan, Pokemon center, Gashapon Bandai Official Shop, jump shop, and marvel shop.

5:30 Go up Tokyo Skytree tower to see the sunset

Go up Sky tree tower to see the sunset at 350m or 450m above ground! You can enjoy the cityscape of Tokyo, with landmarks like Mt Fuji and Tokyo Tower!

7:00 Dinner

End the night with a special themed cafe at Solamachi! Eat a delicious meal at the Moomin cafe or an adorable meal at the Kirby Cafe Tokyo!

Culture 1 Day Itineraries in Tokyo

This is for travelers who are interested in the more cultural and historical side of Tokyo. We will be making stops at Ueno, Asakusa, and Tokyo Sky Tree.

10:00 Ueno Park

Enjoy the quiet morning at Ueno Park and get ready for the day ahead. The park is a great place to people watch, and has a huge pond in the middle filled with plants. 10:30 Tokyo National Museum

Get your Museum on at the Tokyo National Museum,  an art museum located in Ueno Park. It is considered the oldest national museum in Japan, and the largest art museum in Japan. The museum collects, preserves, and displays a comprehensive collection of artwork and cultural objects from Asia, focusing on ancient and medieval Japanese art and Asian art along the Silk Road.

12:00 Asakusa

Head to Asakusa, part of Tokyo’s downtown to get the vibe of an older Tokyo, with traditional craft shops and street-food stalls around the area.

12:30 Lunch

Eat lunch at Gyukatsu Asakusa or eat street food at Nakamise Shopping Street, a street filled with street food from rice crackers, daifuku, mochi, dango, and sweet potato. My personal favorite is a shop with long lines called Asakusa Menchi, which has delicious ground meat cutlets.

1:30 Senso-ji

Senso-ji is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo and also houses a five-story pagoda and trails of incense that will take you back in time to older Japan. Completed in 645, this temple is Tokyo’s oldest.

2:00 Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center

Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center helps visitors to find & learn about Japan’s best attractions, and has many exhibits and places to sit. On the upper floor, there is an outdoor seating area with a gorgeous free view of Nakamise Shopping Street, Senso-ji, the five-story pagoda, Tokyo skytree, and the surrounding areas.

2:30 Arrive to Skytree Tower

3:00 Shop at Solamachi

Shop at various stores in Tokyo Skytree’s Solamachi mall. Visit Asakusa amezaiku Ameshin and watch amezaiku (Amezaiku is a piece of candy art made using a traditional Japanese sculpting technique, which dates back to the 8th century) craftsmen work their magic. Buy souvenirs at Ginza Natsuno, a home goods store to buy quality chopsticks, and hands craft. Look at protective guards, Kabuto, from the Sengoku Period at Sengokudama. Don’t forget to buy Japanese classic snacks at Dagashi Yumeya for cheap and delicious snacks filled to the brim of the store.

End the day by heading to Rikyu for beef tongue or Sora-Tora-Ya for ramen or Obon de Gohan for Japanese set menus
